Pledging: Much More Than a Piece of Paper

It’s August in Cedar Rapids, and you know what that means, right? For lots of us, hot weather, fresh vegetables, and gearing up for school and fall activities.

At Peoples Church, gearing up for fall also means pledging. We’re almost through the No Hassle portion of our pledge campaign, and we’ve already received 29% of pledge forms and reached 44% of our fundraising goal!

It’s not too late to turn in your pledge form before the start of our formal campaign in September. You should do that right now.

But do you know what else you can do right now? You can start talking with other Peoples people about what we’re doing to create a fantastic faith community.

That’s part of the pledge process, too. Pledging isn’t just about turning in a piece of paper and ticking off a to-do item. That’s important, but there’s so much more.

Our pledges are just a vehicle, a means to a far greater end that none of us could achieve by ourselves. It’s a way for us to pull together and participate in creating something bigger than all of us. A welcoming spiritual home. A voice for liberal religion. A force for social justice.

The way we create something bigger is by actively talking and working with other members of the community to envision our goals and bring them to life. We’re all needed in this effort no matter the size of our individual pledges. When we pledge our financial support, we also pledge our hearts and our hopes.

So here’s what you need to do during August.

  1. Return your pledge form if you haven’t already. If you need a new one, you can download a form from our website or email [email protected].
  2. Come to church on Sundays and get the conversation going. How do we create beloved community? How can we all get more involved? What are we excited about at Peoples Church?

Pledge and participate. I look forward to having some great conversations.
