Title: Nursery Attendant  

Reports to: Director of Faith Formation 

FLSA Status: Nonexempt 

Hours and schedule: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. most Sundays

Purpose of Position

  • Provide care to children ages 0-5 in the church nursery during Faith Formation classes and Sunday worship services.  
  • Provide childcare during additional church events as agreed upon ahead of time.   
  • In the event there are no children in the nursery on a Sunday morning, provide support for the Faith Formation team.

  • Organization and Planning: Keep the nursery organized and work with the Director of Faith Formation to implement plans for the good of the Faith Formation program.  
  • Trust and Integrity: Connect with children, families, and church staff with kindness and respect. Maintain confidential information and appropriate boundaries to protect the privacy of church members and their children. Admit errors with transparency in a spirit of learning and growing. 
  • Conflict Management: When needed, identify sources of friction and initiate resolution through direct communication. In all aspects of the role, prioritize active listening, collaboration, and equity.  
  • Interpersonal Skills: Build rapport with natural warmth and emotional intelligence. Prioritize compassion and inclusion when encountering church members, children, and church staff. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Support the health and safety of babies and children 
  • Set up nursery space 
  • Change diapers 
  • Organize toys 
  • Sanitize all surfaces 
  • Sanitize toys 
  • Create a warm and inviting environment for the children and families 
  • Pick up toys, cleaning nursery surfaces at the end of shift 
  • Play with the kids  
  • Maintain attendance records and emergency parent contact information 
  • Be aware of and accommodate special needs as needed i.e. allergies or medical needs 
  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Faith Formation regarding classroom issues, scheduling concerns, supply needs, etc. 

 

  • Additional support of the Faith Formation team when there are no children in the nursery 
  • Assist with teaching Faith Formation classes for children in grades K-5 
  • Assist with clean up after Faith Formation classes 
  • Clean and organize Faith Formation spaces 
  • Assist with craft activity preparation, decorate bulletin boards, make photocopies, and other administrative tasks as needed 

 

Qualifications

Qualifications may be met as a result of education, professional experience, volunteer work, informal training, and/or equivalent lived experiences.  

  • At least 2 years’ experience working with children 
  • Strong verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to lift at least 20 pounds 
  • Ability to get on the floor and interact with children 
  • Willing to submit to criminal background check and sign a code of ethics 
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (PCUU will pay for training if not already certified) 
  • Preferred but not required:  
  • Knowledge of child development 
  • Knowledge of or interest in religious institutions in general or Unitarian Universalism in particular

  • The starting hourly wage is $13.50/hour, with opportunity for advancement after a 90-day probationary period.
